Get Ready to Checkmate: Hannibal Free Public Library Hosts Annual Chess Tournament
Chess enthusiasts, it’s time to mark your calendars and polish your skills as the Hannibal Free Public Library invites players of all levels to participate in its annual chess tournament. Set to take place on Saturday, May 13th, the tournament will offer separate divisions for adults and juniors, with each division winner earning a coveted trophy.
The highly-anticipated event, which is free to enter, attracts players from all over, ranging from experienced veterans to beginners looking to hone their skills. Hallie Yundt-Silver, the director of the Hannibal Free Public Library, shared, “Most of the people we see we’ve seen from other chess tournaments, but we occasionally get other people, and they come from all over Quincy and Hannibal mostly, but some of them come from Pittsfield, and, oh, I think we’ve had one one time from Colorado. I think he was home visiting mom and dad, but still, he was from Colorado.”
Registration will commence at 10 a.m., and the tournament will begin between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m. in a three-round format. The tournament will conclude by 4:00 p.m. or when all games are completed. A lunch break will be held after the first round, offering players a chance to refuel and strategize for the rest of the tournament.
