‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ approaches the $1.5 billion mark
Well, folks, looks like congratulations are (almost) in order. James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water is reportedly on the verge of breaking even after taking in $1.38 billion in ticket sales.
According to Variety, Cameron said the film needs to make $2 billion to reach its goal—but let’s rewind a bit first. Pandora, the director’s comeback after a long hiatus, was released on December 16 and became a splash hit at the box office.
Even as frigid temperatures and holiday gatherings threaten to keep viewers indoors, in just three weeks, the film has seen monumental audience numbers. Apparently, Avatar fandom runs deep! If fans flock to theaters to revisit Jake Sully and Navi, ticket sales could hit the coveted $2 billion mark.
That number may seem astronomical, but that’s exactly what it is. In 2009, the first Avatar film grossed over $3 billion, making it the highest-grossing film of all time. If Cameron gets his wish, The Way of Water may follow suit.
Cameron recently celebrated the film’s success in an Instagram post. “Hi, Jim Cameron is here,” he told his followers in a video. “I want to thank all our fans for coming to see Avatar: The Way of Water in theaters, where it was always meant to be seen and experienced.
For me, this film is a deeply personal journey, so I’m very happy. Many of you have already seen it on the big screen. I’ll see you .” The Way of Water will be in theaters for at least a few weeks before eventually making its way to a streaming service.
If you plan to see it on the big screen, make the epic three-hour drive. Don’t worry you can run to the bathroom after the last shot.
