Northwest Georgia Floods: A state of emergency was declared in the area of northwest Georgia on Sunday after heavy rain and thunderstorms flooded roads and residences here. The area received more than 10 inches of rain within only 12 hours.

For Chattooga and Floyd counties in Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency, and the National Weather Service advised locals to shelter on higher ground and stop going through floodwaters. According to NWS, a flash flood watch is in effect for both counties through Monday night.
In Floyd County, Georgia, many roads are flooded and inaccessible! The NWS stated, “High water signs are up, so be sure to follow the advisories and avoid driving across flooded roads.

“There’s still a similar risk with additional rain there, even if it’s doubtful that the extra rainfall will be anything like what’s already happened.”
On account of flash flooding at a nearby filtration plant, residents of the city of Summerville in Chattooga County were urged to boil water before using it for drinking and cooking, according to the city’s website.
According to the weather service, there will still be a general flash flood concern across western Carolinas, northern Georgia, and northern Alabama.
Although the region’s recent torrential rains are a “rare” occurrence, flash flooding tends to peak in the summer in states like Georgia, Kentucky, and Mississippi.
In july and early August, Kentucky suffered record flooding that caused at least 39 deaths and significant property damage. As the Pearl River was expected to peak last Monday following days of torrential rainfall that saturated the area, Jackson, Mississippi, also declared a state of emergency on Sunday.
Although flooding is not “abnormal” in these states, Chenard claimed that recent occurrences have been “major in magnitude and not all that common.
