Jacinda Ardern said in a statement Thursday that she will step down as leader of the South Pacific nation next month and will not seek re-election later this year.

“I believe that leading a country is the most privileged job one can have, but it is also more challenging.

You cannot and should not do this unless you have a full tank and a little bit in reserve for unexpected challenges,” she told the media at a news conference.

“I am not seeking re-election. "My tenure as Prime Minister will end on February 7," Ardern expressed.

Ardern, who became prime minister in 2017 at the age of 37, has been immensely popular at home for deftly handling three unexpected crises.
